Why is the pH of Your Water Important to the Quality?

You may remember doing an experiment in science class where you stuck a thin strip of paper into a glass of tap water and determined the water’s pH based on what color appeared on the strip. You were performing a pH test. What is pH, and why is it important?

Simply put, pH measures how acidic or basic a sample of water is on a scale of 0 – 14. A pH of 7 means that the water is neither acidic nor basic. A pH of less than 7 indicates that the water is acidic, and a measurement greater than 7 means that the water is basic.

Pure water should be at a 7; however, most water samples are either acidic or basic. That is because natural water often contains dissolved minerals. Some water also contains chemicals and pollutants that can drastically alter its acidity or basic nature. Measuring the pH of a water sample can help testers determine if water supply is healthy for humans and animals to drink and live in (in the case of fish and other water life).
